With his fusion of dancehall, reggae, Afro-beat, and pop, Burna Boy emerged in the early part of the 2010s as one of Nigeria’s fastest rising stars.
The LeriQ-produced 2012 single “Like to Party” proved to be his breakout track and paved the way for his full-length debut, L.I.F.E, a year later.
Over the next five years, Burna released two more albums and collaborated with a variety of artists, from J Hus and Skales to Fall Out Boy and Lilly Allen.
His international exposure widened with 2018’s Outside, which hit number three on the Billboard Reggae chart and won the Nigeria Entertainment Award for Album of the Year.
In advance of his next LP, 2019’s African Giant, Burna made his first appearance at California’s Coachella festival.
Burna Boy’s real name is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu born on 2 July 1991.
His stage name is “Burna boy” or “Oluwa Burna” has popular addresses by his/her fans across the world.

His mother “Bosede Ogulu” was a translator while his grandmother “Benson Idonije” was the manger of Fela Kuti.
Burna Boy’s mother, Bose Ogulu was one of Fela’s dancers in the 80s.
Later, Bosede Ogulu became the Manager of Fela Kuti, which has also automatically become the manager of Burna Boy.
Burna Boy Education
During the Burna Boy secondary school days at Corona Secondary School in Agbara, he discovers his talent.
By that time, Burna Boy was just a 10 years old boy trying to figure out what best for him.
He was then introduced to a music software called “FruityLoops” by his classmate in secondary school.
In the process of learning the software, he started producing his very own beats for music.
This also exposes him to the school band with a recommendation from others.
However, he didn’t just stop at his secondary school (high school graduate) but further his study in London.
On arrival to London, Burna Boy was enrolled at the University of Sussex to study Media Technology.
He didn’t meet up with everything according to the University and demand transfer to another institution.
Based on his demand, he was transferred to Oxford Brooke’s University before he made up his mind to drop out.
To drop out was the best decision for Burna Boy in his second year at university and move back to Nigeria to pursue his music career.
Burna Boy Career
Burna Boy started his music career in the year 2010 when he came back from London.
By that time, he was signed to the Aristocrat Records label.
In 2012, he releases his first studio album with one the single that rose to prominence “Like to Party”.
However, he sold 40,000 copies on that album on the launching day.
In that album release was five single: “Like to Party“, “Tonight”, “Always Love You”, “Run My Race” and “Yawa Dey”.
That same L.I.F.E album features Nigerian musicians like Wizkid, 2Baba Idibia, Timaya, Olamide, MI, and Reminisce.
The album was produced by Leriq but the marketing was later sold out to Uba Pacific for ₦10 million by the Aristocrat Records label.
Burna Boy moves to start his own record label “Spaceship Entertainment” in February 2015 and launch his second album “EP Redemption”.
In his second album, they were two popular track that became more popular “Rizzla” and “Soke”.
In 2017, Burna Boy signed with Bad Habit/Atlantic Records in the United States and Warner Music Group internationally.
Moreover, his third studio album “Outside” was released on January 2018, and that same month, he was featured in “Sunshine Riptide” by “Fall Out Boy’s”.
He also featured J Hus, Lily Allen, and Mabel as a guest vocalist.
His fouth Studio Album “African Gaint” was launched on July 2019 with six singles: “Gbona”, “On the Low”, Killin Dem”, “Dangote”, “Anybody” and “Pull Up”.
Controversies
Many people think that Burna Boy is related to Fela Kuti – the King of Afro Beat.
According to Pulse.ng, it was stated that Burna Boy was ban from Uk for alleged involvement in a gang-related crime.
Thou he disputes the circulation around the internet but gave an answer to the interviewer.
In the interview, Burna Boy said: “I’m not going to go into the whole story because obviously right now I am 23 years old, I am going to be 24 in July”.
“I lived in the UK for a bunch of years before 2010 and until I was 20”.
“Obviously my parents are not the richest in the world, and I am not the brightest kid in the world”.
“I felt I had to do what I had to do at the time”
He further emphasizes that he came back from the United Kingdom itself that he wasn’t deported.
On his further discussion, he said: “I was booked to go back again for a show and everything, and I didn’t get the visa”.
“The reason why I didn’t get the visa was that I left when I wasn’t supposed to leave”.
Another controversy about Burna Boy was when a blogger reported the story of his alleged baby mama, Uju Stella.
He moves to accused Nigerian bloggers and called “dummies” of not confirming the truth in their reports before disseminating them.
