As the number of infections from the novel coronavirus increase daily, the Rivers State Government has released 62 inmates from three prisons in the state.

Performing the jail delivery exercise, the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Adama Iyayi Lamikanra, released 62 inmates awaiting trials from the Ahoada, Degema and Port Harcourt prisons.

The inmates received stipends and were admonished to become better citizens to ensure that they do not return to prison.

On his part, the comptroller of Correction, Rivers State Command, Olumide Tinuoye, said the release of one female inmate and 61 male inmates, is aimed at decongesting prison facilities in the state, inline with the Federal Government directives.

He noted that such exercises such be performed periodically to decongest prisons across the state with over 4,000 inmates.
